National Blood Service Agency Partners with Values Africa to Mobilise 10,000 Voluntary Blood Donors in the FCT

The National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) is pleased to announce a strategic collaboration with Values Africa, a pan-African media and advocacy organisation, aimed at mobilising 10,000 voluntary blood donors across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by May 2025.

This announcement follows a high-level meeting between the Director General of the NBSA, Professor Saleh Yuguda, and representatives of Values Africa, led by its Coordinator, Mr. Bamidele Olowo. The partnership seeks to expand the reach and effectiveness of voluntary blood donation in all six area councils of the FCT, ensuring the steady availability of safe and affordable blood for patients in need.

“This initiative speaks directly to our mandate of promoting voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation across Nigeria,” said Professor Yuguda. “We are proud to support Values Africa’s campaign and commend their commitment to leveraging media and community engagement to drive this life-saving effort.”

The campaign will involve mass sensitisation efforts through schools, religious centres, marketplaces, and corporate establishments. It will also introduce donor tracking systems and emergency notification tools to facilitate a more responsive and efficient blood supply system.

Nigeria continues to face a significant gap between blood demand and supply. With voluntary donations falling below WHO recommendations, the burden of unsafe and commercial blood sources remains a major concern. The NBSA believes this campaign will serve as a critical intervention to address the shortfall in the FCT and potentially serve as a model for replication in other states.

Mr. Bamidele noted that the campaign is rooted in African communal values. “We are driven by the belief that our communities thrive when we look out for one another. Donating blood is not just a medical act—it is an expression of solidarity and shared humanity,” he said.

The NBSA reiterates its commitment to ensuring that no patient in Nigeria is denied access to safe blood due to scarcity or cost. We urge all eligible citizens to join this effort and become regular voluntary blood donors.
